Flat ground does not remove drainage questions. High water, ditches, field runoff and soft areas can make water management and base stability central to the paving brief.

Heavy-vehicle use does not translate into one standard specification. Existing ground, drainage, traffic frequency and the geometry of the route all influence how the scope should be developed.
Protect the lane at the edges.
Water can travel along a lane, collect at low points or soften shoulders. Ditches, culverts, field entrances and crossfall should be understood before the surface grade is fixed. Edge support also matters where wheels regularly leave the asphalt or equipment tracks close to the shoulder.
