1. Observe the existing route.
Ruts, soft areas, standing water and loose edges show how the gravel surface is currently performing.
Document the property entrance, driving path, parking or turning, drainage, ditches, slopes and fixed elevations. Note areas that move during wet conditions or require regular regrading.
2. Define the paved limits.
The paved width and geometry should support how vehicles actually move. This can include gate clearance, garage access, turnaround needs, trailer movement, farm equipment and safe transitions back to gravel.
Road connection, culvert and gate.
Width, passing, shoulders and curves.
Garage, barn, yard, parking or loading.
Crossfall, ditch, drain and low points.
3. Prepare the support and grade.
Preparation can include removing unsuitable material, correcting soft areas, shaping the route, adding or adjusting granular material and compacting the base. The exact work depends on what is found and the traffic the surface is expected to carry.
Wet-weather clues are useful
If the property behaves differently during heavy rain, describe what you observe. Photos of ponding, ditch overflow or soft areas can help explain conditions that may not be visible on a dry day.
4. Pave, connect and finish.
After preparation and grade are confirmed, asphalt can be placed and compacted within the defined limits. Road, garage and other surface transitions are completed, and the edges are reviewed in relation to shoulders and surrounding ground.
The final surface should make the property easier to move through while preserving the intended water path.
